We’re doing a joint Virtual Communities and Libraries Member Initiative Group (MIG) and ACRL Virtual Worlds Interest Group meeting! Hope you can make it in person or virtually!

Sunday, June 26, 2011:  4:00pm – 5:30pm Central Time; 2:00pm – 3:30pm Second Life Time/Pacific Time (SLT/PT)

Location: InterContinental New Orleans, Vieux Carre A at 444 St. Charles Ave and ALA Island in Second Life

Join with the Virtual Communities and Libraries Member Initiative Group (MIG) and the ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) Virtual Worlds Interest Group for a discussion about hot topics affecting library service delivery in MMUs (massive multiplayer universes), plus planning for future events.

June 26 2010 ALA Annual Conference Meetings on ALA Island

The ALA VCL MIG (Virtual Communities and Libraries, Member Initiative Group) will have a program and business meeting this Saturday, June 26th in DC (District of Columbia) and SL (Second Life).  Everyone is welcome to attend and participate.

Locations:
a.  Washington Convention Center, Room 303
b.  ALA Island in Second Life – http://slurl.com/secondlife/ALA%20Island/118/102/29/

Start Times:
a.  1:30 p.m. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time)
b.  10:30 a.m. SLT (Second Life Time, also Pacific Daylight Time)

Duration:  2.5 hours max.

Program:
>>  Tom Boellstorff, author of Coming of Age in Second Life:  An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human, will speak about his studies
>>  Other discussions and presentations too numerous to mention.
>>  Business meeting to follow:  This is a MIG (Member Initiative Group).  Everyone’s ideas and input are welcome!

Another Program of Interest:  The ACRL VW IG (Virtual Worlds Interest Group) will be meeting in CAP South American beginning at 4:00 EDT (1:00 SLT) on Saturday.

The ALA Virtual Communities and Libraries Member Initiative Group will meet on Saturday, June 26th from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. EDT.  The Second Life attendees will convene on ALA Island in Second Life, at 10:30 am SL time.

Tom Boellstorff will speak about his 2008 book Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human.

Library and Information Science graduate students will talk about their experiences in Second Life, especially the Virtual Worlds: Libraries, Education, and Museums in-world conference held earlier this year.

We also plan to discuss future Virtual Communities and Libraries activities.  We also have heard a rumor (from a reliable source) that a surprise guest whom everyone will be interested in hearing plans to make an appearance at our meeting.
